Oğulcan ÖZDİL | atourguideinconstantinople
Hi there, I’m Oğulcan — though most people call me Can. As Oğulcan ÖZDİL | atourguideinconstantinople, I am the founder of atourguideinconstantinople, a licensed professional tour guide and travel agency owner with more than a decade of hands-on experience in the field.
Let me briefly introduce who I am, what I do, and what atourguideinconstantinople represents. This page shares my story as a licensed Istanbul tour guide, my journey through history and tourism, and the vision behind the brand I built to offer meaningful, story-driven experiences in the city I call home.

Born and Raised in Istanbul
I was born and raised in Kadıköy, on Istanbul’s Asian side — a district known for neighborhood life, seaside walks, and cultural diversity. Although I was born in a hospital in Kadıköy, I grew up in its inner quarters. My childhood was spent between Suadiye, Şaşkınbakkal, Caddebostan, and Göztepe.
I completed my early education at İlhami Ahmed Örnekal Primary School in Göztepe. Those formative years were shaped by constant movement across the Asian side of Istanbul — friendships, street football, and the rhythm of the city long before tourism became my profession.

First Steps into Tourism
My professional path began at Etiler Hotel Management and Tourism Vocational High School, where tourism became part of my daily life. During high school, I completed two years of internships at five-star hotels in Bodrum, Muğla. These experiences introduced me to hospitality, guest relations, and the discipline of tourism, shaping the early vision of Oğulcan ÖZDİL | atourguideinconstantinople.
At the end of high school, I faced a life-changing decision: leaving Istanbul for higher education. With support from my teachers and family, I moved to Ankara to study Travel Management & Tourism Guiding at Gazi University. Leaving behind my city and family was difficult, but it became one of the best decisions of my life.

Discovering the Calling
University life was challenging. Adapting to Ankara’s climate and urban landscape was difficult, and the early days even lacked stable accommodation. Yet these years were transformative.
My pivotal moment came during the summer of 2013, when I interned at a local travel agency. As a young intern assisting tour operations, I woke up before sunrise to meet buses on Istanbul’s European side, greeting travelers hotel by hotel and guiding them through their first impressions of the city.
Those early responsibilities — ensuring guests stayed together, assisting visitors with mobility challenges, and occasionally stepping in to explain historical sites — gave me my first taste of guiding. Small opportunities inside museums and at meeting points convinced me: this was not just a job; it was my vocation.
Passion for History
History had always fascinated me. Even in high school, I read and wrote about historical topics purely out of curiosity. While I was never a straight-A student, I consistently excelled in subjects that sparked my imagination — particularly history.
After graduating from university and returning to Istanbul, I completed the rigorous licensing process required to become a professional tour guide in Türkiye, including language exams and extensive national training tours.
Still eager to grow academically, I pursued a master’s degree in International Relations and Political Science at Nişantaşı University. Although the program broadened my perspective, I ultimately returned to my original passion: history. This led me to enroll in the History program at Istanbul University, where I continue to focus particularly on Eastern Roman (Byzantine) history — a field that endlessly enriches my storytelling as a guide.

Experience, Challenges, and Independence
My career progressed through years of experimentation, learning, and guiding thousands of travelers across Istanbul. Like many professionals, I experienced both rewarding achievements and difficult workplace moments.
Between 2021 and 2022, I began planning my independence. Determined to build something of my own, I worked intensively — often conducting dozens of tours weekly — while saving every possible resource. During this period, I even operated solo tour programs, delivering hundreds of guided experiences without the support of a large team.
Eventually, with savings accumulated and a clear roadmap in mind, I rented my own office — the same place where I write these words today. That step marked the transition from freelancer to entrepreneur.
Building a Brand
Launching a travel business in Türkiye requires significant legal and financial preparation. Step by step, I completed the process: establishing my company, securing documentation, and developing my own tour programs.
By 2024, the vision materialized. My company was officially founded and began operating independently, delivering immersive historical tours across Istanbul. Conducting multiple sessions daily, I gradually shifted focus from guiding alone to building a recognizable brand rooted in authenticity, research, and storytelling.

Today — atourguideinconstantinople
atourguideinconstantinople was officially established in August 2024 and is based in Istanbul, Türkiye. I am the founder and sole owner of my travel agency, operating under Dreamscape Expeditions Travel Agency (License No. 17495) and affiliated with TÜRSAB — The Association of Turkish Travel Agencies.
My mission is simple yet ambitious:
to transform how travelers experience Istanbul.
I combine historical accuracy, academic insight, and engaging storytelling to present the city beyond guidebook narratives. Each tour is designed not merely as sightseeing, but as an encounter with the layers of Constantinople, Byzantium, and Ottoman Istanbul.
My Guiding Philosophy, Experience & Achievements
My guiding philosophy is built on the belief that a tour should be more than information — it should be a meaningful experience. I combine academic accuracy with engaging storytelling, allowing travelers to understand Istanbul’s monuments, neighborhoods, and hidden layers through historical context and personal insight.
With an academic background in tourism and history, I prioritize reliable interpretation while keeping tours accessible, immersive, and conversational. I specialize in small-group and private tours, offering personalized pacing, deeper discussions, and flexibility tailored to each traveler’s interests.
My professional expertise also includes skip-the-line planning and efficient route design, helping guests maximize their time at Istanbul’s most visited landmarks without unnecessary waiting.
Throughout my career, I have guided thousands of travelers in English across Istanbul’s most iconic historical sites, including Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, and Topkapı Palace. Alongside guiding, I continue my work through historical research, writing, and content production — shaping my identity as atourguideinconstantinople.
