Covering breaking news and stories of the Istanbul.

TOPLİNE A new one has been added to the hundreds of cisterns in Istanbul. Istanbul cisterns, the most well-known example of which is the Basilica Cistern, continue to be unearthed. If you’ve seen the movie Inferno starring Tom Hanks, you’ve had the chance to see this cistern before. The historical peninsula’s Gülhane Park, originally the royal garden of the Topkapi palace, is now the most beautiful park in Istanbul.

KEY FACTS

  • The cistern, which could not be visited for a very long time, was opened to visitors after restoration works.
  • The cistern, which is very easy to visit with the walking platform added to the structure, is also free of charge.
  • The cistern is dated between the 5th and 7th centuries A.D. and it is not yet known by whom it may have been built.
  • This building, which dates back to the Roman period, probably had another building on top of it.
  • According to a 1912 Ottoman document, the park was opened to the public with the permission of Sultan Mehmed Reşad, and this was the first time the cistern was identified, and with a fountain added nearby, water cultures from these two different eras met.

KEY BACKROUND

Today, modern art exhibitions are held in the cistern. The cistern is open to the interest of locals and foreigners and is completely free to visit. The cistern is today known as the Gülhane cistern and is located in the park next to the Topkapi palace. Those who want to reach here by tram can reach the park with a short 5-minute walk after leaving at the stop named Gülhane.
