TOPLİNE The historic Botter Apartment on Istiklal Street in Istanbul is now an art and design center. Built in the Art Nouveau style between 1900 and 1901, the architect Raimondo D’Aronco is also known as the architect of Istanbul’s characteristic buildings. The Italian-born architect built this building for Jean Botter, the Ottoman palace tailor during the reign of Abdülhamid II. For this reason, the apartment building bears the name Botter.

- His tailor Botter’s designs, combining classical and modern lines, attracted the attention and admiration of Sultan Abdülhamid II.
- In order to show his interest in his tailor, he had a fashion house built for him on Istiklal Street, where it is located today.
- Jean Botter continued to work here, while at the same time designing the apartment as a residence for family members.
- In the reliefs of the facade, all the details of the building and its texture are announced. There are also elements of tailoring, tassels, flowers and floral motifs, which are also common in fabrics.
KEY BACKROUND
Opened on April 14, 2023 (Friday), Botter Apartment is now an art and design center. During the restorations, care was taken to preserve the traces of the historical fabric and a historical apartment building was once again gifted to all visitors of Istanbul. The municipality has meticulously completed the restoration and this wonderful building can now be visited again.
